Open Heart Surgery

This was my very first sculpture ever made. Open Heart Surgery was the catalyst to me recognizing that this medium is what I wanted to work with in my creative practice.

Many people have seen this piece before. Many people have not. This is where it all started. From coercing a teacher to let me cast my torso after a failed attempt. To convincing a concrete craftsman and a blacksmith to work with me on how I was going to display her. There were so many hours put in as the sun was rising. This piece has led me to reconnect with myself and what I care about: community and expression through art. I’ve met some extraordinary people from this experience and continue to. All I know is love what you do, whatever that is.
